Aims of The English Faculty

To stimulate lasting pupil interest and enjoyment in English: to create an atmosphere in which pupils wish to learn and are active participants in English, and where staff enjoy teaching, so they give of their very best. This will enable each pupil to achieve his/her potential in a variety of situations, using all available resources appropriately and will ensure the highest level of achievement for each pupil.

3. To develop the habit of reading and actively encourage pupils to value reading as a pleasure and as an important life skill.

4. To enable pupils to be familiar with a body of knowledge, principles and vocabulary in Standard English.

5. By exposing pupils to a wide range of materials (both literary and media) to enable pupils to see English as: a major cultural feature and part of a wider body of knowledge and skills.

6. To support the ethos of the school and to enable pupils to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as safety awareness, politeness, perseverance, concern for others and initiative.

7. To enable pupils to work independently and as part of a team in varied activities in order that English contributes to the development of core skills such as ICT, Reading, Writing and Talking.

8. To employ teaching methods and resources that allow pupils (irrespective of gender, ethnic origin, academic or physical ability) to have equal access to English and to experience success and enjoyment in their work.

9. To value each individual and so encourage each pupil to value and respect others. In so doing, to encourage empathy so that each pupil approaches issues of race, gender and ability with tolerance and insight.

10. To develop an awareness in pupils of the implications of the English and the Scots language (past, present and future) for the individual and local, national and international communities.

Extra Activities

 

Teachers of the English Department recognise the importance of drama. To this end, in-school workshops and performances are organised as often as possible. In addition, theatre trips are organised out of school hours. Writers often visit the school to talk (mainly to senior classes) about their work. Senior pupils have opportunities to attend lectures at the University of Stirling and to become members of the university library. Alloa Academy pupils have participated in local and regional debating competitions. S1-3 pupils have participated in the BBC HardSpell competition and first and second year pupils participate in Readathon on an annual basis.
